Being what’s known as a ‘step on guide’.
Taking 50 guests on a charter bus to Crater Lake National Park felt less like a tour and more like slipping into a shared time warp. As the miles rolled by and the modern world faded, stories began to layer themselves over the landscape—Indigenous legends, early explorers, fire, collapse, and rebirth. Somewhere between the Rogue Valley and the rim, the bus quieted. People weren’t just looking out the windows anymore; they were traveling backward, realizing they were heading toward one of the deepest geological stories on Earth.
Standing on the rim, the effect was immediate and unmistakable. Crater Lake isn’t just beautiful—it’s disorienting in the best possible way. When guests learn that this serene blue lake fills the collapsed remains of Mount Mazama, a once-massive volcano that violently erupted nearly 7,700 years ago, the scale of time hits hard. Faces change. Conversations stop. The mind struggles—and then stretches—to comprehend that the calm before them was born from unimaginable chaos.
As the stories unfolded, the group fell fully into the rhythm of deep time. Lava flows became chapters. Ash layers became punctuation marks. Wizard Island transformed from a photo opportunity into a volcanic epilogue written after the mountain destroyed itself. Guests began connecting dots between geology, climate, water purity, and human memory. More than once, someone said, “I’ve been here before—but I never saw it like this.”
By the time we boarded the bus to leave, everyone knew something had shifted. Crater Lake has that power when its full story is told—not just what it is, but how it came to be. The geologic history of Crater Lake is as deep as the lake itself, and when you trace that story from fire to water to silence, it leaves people changed. Minds blown. Perspectives widened. Time, briefly, rewound—and no one wanted to rush back to the present.

Couldn’t have done it without my good friend Sarkis Kirikian(Սարգիս Կիրիկեան). He piloted the bus expertly on the most twisty mountain roads. His name literally means ‘vigilant shepherd’!
