Life in Wizard Islands Secret Lakes!

Exploring the Secret Lakes of Wizard Island feels like stepping into a geological riddle hidden inside a riddle. Rising from the impossibly blue waters of Crater Lake, Wizard Island is a cinder cone volcano with its own crater. Yet on the flanks of the cinder cone there are not one but 5 lakes! No streams flow in, no rivers flow out, and yet life has been found here before. These ephemeral “secret lakes” ignite one of my most burning questions: how did fish even get in there?

The short answer: they almost certainly didn’t — at least not naturally. While fish inhabit Crater Lake due to historic stocking, the tiny lakes on Wizard Island are isolated and extreme. There’s no permanent water connection, making long-term fish survival nearly impossible. Stories of fish appearing here likely stem from misidentification, transient invertebrates, or the human tendency to project life where we expect it. The real marvel isn’t fish — it’s how water itself persists in such an exposed volcanic bowl.

I suspect the Park Service. Hardly anyone ever visits these lakes as they’re off the trail and you only get 3 hours on the island once you take the boat ride from Cleetwood Cove. But the Park Service Rangers tell me that they’ve been here multiple times. Hmm, a clue.

I can imagine someone catching some fish in the main lake nearby and deciding it would be fun to release them into the smaller, isolated lakes – to live and spawn.

Wizard Island exists because of catastrophe. Around 7,700 years ago, the collapse of Mount Mazama created the Crater Lake caldera, and Wizard Island later emerged as a secondary eruption within it. That layered volcanic history creates porous rock, rapid drainage, and microclimates capable of briefly cradling water. These summit lakes are reminders that landscapes are still evolving — even ones that feel ancient and complete.

This is where the sublime comes in. In nature, the sublime is the feeling that arises when beauty and vastness collide with mystery and power — when understanding falls just short. Standing above Crater Lake, peering into a hidden lake atop a volcano inside a volcano, you’re confronted with scale, time, and uncertainty all at once. Wizard Island’s secret lakes don’t offer easy answers — and that’s exactly the point.
