Our official position on the existence of Bigfoot

Today we take some friends of Jim Belushi to Crater Lake. Setting the tone for a day that felt both intimate and epic. As we began the hike up Watchman Peak, conversation naturally turned toward the deep time story of the landscape around us. Crater Lake isn’t just a beautiful destination—it’s a geological and cultural crossroads, where personal stories, ancient legends, and modern curiosity intersect. That blend is exactly what makes guided experiences here so powerful and unforgettable.

As the trail gained elevation, we talked about the Native American folklore surrounding the lake’s creation, particularly stories passed down by the Klamath Tribes. Long before geology named Mount Mazama, oral tradition told of a great battle between powerful spirits that reshaped the land and formed the impossibly blue lake below. Sharing these stories in the very place they were born adds a gravity that no textbook can match—and it deepens visitors’ emotional connection to Crater Lake National Park.

On the way back home, the conversation took a turn toward Pacific Northwest mystery: the enduring legend of Bigfoot. With old-growth forests stretching to the horizon, it’s easy to understand why stories of Sasquatch persist in Southern Oregon. Whether taken seriously or enjoyed as folklore, Bigfoot represents our fascination with the unknown—an idea that pairs surprisingly well with a volcanic landscape shaped by forces still not fully understood.

We also talked about the legendary Patterson–Gimlin film, captured in 1967 (not the 1950s) by Roger Patterson and Bob Gimlin in Northern California.

That short strip of film—showing a large, hair-covered figure walking across Bluff Creek—became the most famous visual evidence associated with Bigfoot, and it’s a big reason why conversations about Sasquatch feel so at home in places like Crater Lake, where deep forests and mystery still dominate the landscape.

Standing atop Watchman Peak, looking down into the caldera, all of these threads—celebrity connections, indigenous wisdom, cryptid legends, and raw geology—came together. Experiences like this are why Crater Lake tours resonate so deeply with people. It’s not just about sightseeing; it’s about storytelling, context, and discovering that this iconic Oregon destination has far more layers than meet the eye.
